5 Reasons Kigali Is Africa's Cleanest City

Walk through the streets of Kigali and the first thing you notice is how remarkably clean everything is. Unlike many rapidly growing African capitals, Kigali has managed to pair its development with a fierce commitment to environmental stewardship. The result is a city that feels fresh, organized, and genuinely welcoming to visitors and residents alike.

One of the most visible initiatives is Umuganda, a mandatory community service day held on the last Saturday of every month. From the president to university students, everyone participates — sweeping streets, clearing drainage channels, and planting trees. This tradition, rooted in Rwandan culture, has created a shared sense of pride in public spaces that is palpable the moment you arrive.

Rwanda was also one of the first countries in the world to ban single-use plastic bags, back in 2008. Visitors arriving at Kigali International Airport may have their luggage checked for plastic bags, which are confiscated and replaced with paper or reusable alternatives. This bold policy has kept roadsides, waterways, and green spaces free of the plastic pollution that plagues many cities globally.

The city government has invested heavily in green infrastructure, including bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and urban parks like the Kigali Centenary Park. Street lighting runs on solar power in many neighborhoods, and a fleet of electric buses is being phased in along major routes. These efforts reflect a broader national vision encapsulated in Rwanda's Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy.

For travelers, the practical impact is a city that feels safe, modern, and respectful of both its citizens and its guests. Dining alfresco, walking to a gallery, or jogging along a tree-lined avenue in Kigali is a pleasure precisely because the city takes cleanliness and sustainability seriously. It is one of many reasons we are proud to call Kigali home.
